East Midlands Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia Network

East Midlands Haemoglobinopathy Coordinating Centre

The East Midlands Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia Network (EMSTN) is the regional Haemoglobinopathy Coordinating Centre, providing comprehensive care for adults, children and families affected by Sickle Cell Disorder, Thalassaemia or Rare Inherited Anaemia’s across our region.

About us:

East Midlands Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia Network (EMSTN), led by University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL), works as the designated Haemoglobinopathy Coordinating Centre (HCC) within the region to support the provision of services to adults and children that suffer with Sickle Cell Disorder, Thalassaemia or Rare Inherited Anaemia’s.

EMSTN offers comprehensive genetic counselling and screening services to support individuals and families affected by Sickle Cell Disorder, Thalassaemia and Rare Inherited Anaemias. Our specialist teams provide information, personalised guidance, and accessible screening pathways to help people understand their genetic risks and make informed decisions.

As part of the National Haemoglobinopathy Panel (NHP), EMSTN also plays a key role in sharing regional insight, and helping to shape national standards of practive for haemglobinopathy care. Further information about the NHP can be found here.

Our Aim:

EMSTN’s overall aim is to deliver high-quality, equitable, and coordinated care for adults and children living with Sickle Cell Disorder, Thalassaemia and Rare Inherited Anaemia’s across the East Midlands, through collaborative working, shared expertise and consistent regional standards.

Our Core Network:

Our core network coverage is delivered through our two Specialist Haemglobinopathy Teams (SHT’s), University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) and Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH), who work collaboratively with our local teams to support and deliver co-ordinated services across the region. This includes services in Leicester, Nottingham, Northampton, Kettering, Peterborough, Lincoln, Derby, and Burton-on-Trent.

EMSTN also work closely with Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust and Birmingham Women’s & Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, as they are the designated HCC for Thalassaemia within the Midlands region. This partnership ensures strengthened clinical pathways, shared learning opportunities and alignment with national standards for care.

More information on the organisation of services across England can be found here.
